Derek Sharman MBE

Derek SharmanDerek Sharman MBE is a native of Durham City, and graduated from Durham University in Combined Arts (History, Theology and Philosophy). He holds a City and Guilds Certificate in Adult and Further Education and was a tutor with the Workers' Educational Association for fourteen years, teaching local, regional and national history.
Derek and his wife Hazel are partners in a tour guide business, conducting walking tours around the town and walls in Berwick, see
He also works as an on-coach guide and courier throughout North East England and the Scottish Borders. He was programme director for an American travel company, conducting US tourists around northern England and Scotland, from Chester to the Orkneys.
In 2007, Derek was awarded an MBE "for services to the heritage of Berwick-upon-Tweed". His activities since moving to Berwick in 1983 have included organising and managing a wide range of heritage and local food related projects, which has involved working with bodies such as Berwick History Society, Berwick Civic Society, Berwick Record Office, Cittaslow Berwick, Berwick Chamber of Trade and the Mouth of the Tweed initiative. Derek has also co-ordinated a number of major events in the town and the local area including the Union of the Crowns 400, The Golden Age of Northumbria and Berwick
